Whatever you do, don’t tell our chickens how much time we spent with the @PolyfaceFarm laying hens on our Virginiastravaganza road trip last week.

The scrapwood chicken chateau debuts today! We framed, cladded, and painted this glorious poultry palace even before finalizing a chick order with the breeder back in March (all with wood from our scrap pile—we don’t pay those high prices). Back before the sweat bees, mosquitos, and oppressive heat showed up to help us put the finishing touches on.

Miss Kiwi’s got style. And what she lacks in tail, she makes up for in hat. For the record, her breed is supposed to have a tail. We could tell soon after bringing this year’s chicks home that little Kiwi would be rumpless. When we first cleared away the kudzu, there were decisions to make about ground cover for our newly uncovered field. This is Chris’ jam; I had no idea there were so many field-seed choices. He considered our goals and chose a mix to attract wildlife and nourish livestock. This was long before we had “bee brain” and based decisions on supporting heavy pollinator populations, but wow, Chris nailed it. It’s amazing walking out into a buzzing field of flowers every morning. And all those boxes stacked on the hives? #honey!! #pollinators #saveallthebees #wildlife #landlife #clover #honeybee #nativebees
